You reap what you sow.

This is a popular sentiment which often turns out to be true. To become good at anything, accomplish big goals, or check things off your bucket list, you’ll have to put in the effort to make it happen. This is where our work ethic comes into play.

Describe what it means to have a strong work ethic

We all have a work ethic. Cultures define work ethic in different ways, workplaces promote a certain level of effort to be a good employee, and families have various ideas of a balanced approach to work.

The definition of work ethic is a principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward. My parents lived through the Great Depression which caused them to be resourceful and resilient in the face of life’s challenges. They taught my siblings and I this very principle.

Your work ethic, however, does not have to include sweating and suffering. It’s all about prioritizing tasks to get things done on time. Included in the idea of a strong work ethic is being on time and doing what you say you’ll do. In the workplace, an employee with a strong work ethic is motivated and produces consistent results.

A strong work ethic includes integrity, honesty, discipline, and being fair, respectful, responsible, and accountable. A weak work ethic is the opposite of these things. You probably know people all along the spectrum.

It can be said that our “work ethic” can also apply to relationships, personal well-being, or spiritual understanding. Relationships do not just happen but can flourish when each party puts effort into creating a strong connection with each other. Your overall well-being, physical, mental, and spiritual, is affected by how much effort you put into caring for your body, mind, and spirit. And how well you are connected to the world and others in a spiritual sense is based on your pursuit of these principles. Regardless of what faith practice you have, your participation in it is what will cause it to grow.

Why is it a good habit to have a strong work ethic?

In the workplace, it’s a good idea to have a strong work ethic. Those who perform consistently and enthusiastically are likely to be noticed by their employers and promoted. This is the easiest place to see the direct results of a strong work ethic.

As you pursue your goals, either career or personal, your work ethic is one of the biggest factors that will contribute to you accomplishing them. Of course, there are also random, interesting, and surprising things that happen to either thwart or drive you to success. COVID is a perfect example of something that came out of the blue and had devastating consequences for some and positive consequences for others. Your work ethic, however, is the thing you can control as you pursue your goals.

Having a dream or vision for your life will require a strong work ethic to be realized. It’s said that the difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. To grasp your vision, you will need to put legs on a plan and put in the effort required. Fulfilling your dreams or vision leads to a fulfilling life.

How can you form a strong work ethic?

  1. Start Small. With every habit, it’s best to start small so your steps are sustainable. Without a manageable process, you are likely to fail and stop pursuing it at all.

  2. Become aware of the steps you need to take to accomplish a particular goal. Want to lose weight? Come up with a plan. Want to travel to Europe? Come up with a plan. Want to get along better with your family? Come up with a plan.

  3. Work on the plan. Take steps towards your goals in a systematic way.

  4. Periodically review whether the steps you’re taking are working.

  5. Revise your plan if aren’t seeing success.

  6. Do not give up!

  7. Stay positive! Having a mindset where you are optimistic about your efforts will propel you forward even if things are not happening as you expected.

  8. Be realistic. Another aspect of developing a strong work ethic is to assess whether your efforts are fruitful. There are no points for pushing a rock in the wrong direction. Feedback from others is a good way to channel your energy in the right way.

  9. Hang out with people who have a strong work ethic. We become like the 5 people we spend the most time with, so if you want to develop this habit, make sure you’re spending time with energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated people.

To maintain a strong work ethic, you’ll need to have harmony of play and rest in your life. There is no right formula for everyone. You can experiment with your own life to strike the right balance for you.
